Whisky Tastings

A typical WhiskyDC tasting involves at least five different Scottish single malt whiskies. The whisky tasting convener informs the guests of the whisky-making process, identifies the Scottish whisky regions, describes the tasting process, leads the discussion of the tasting of the whiskies, and encourages the guests to do comparative tastings after the formal presentation. WhiskyDC provides tasting cups, visual aids and whisky tasting brochures. See a sample of whisky tasting notes from a recent tasting. (Acrobat PDF 48 Kb)

WhiskyDC provides both public and private Scottish single malt whisky tastings.

Public tastings

Offer your home for a tasting and let WhiskyDC take care of everything! We'll promote the event to our e-mail list of whisky-lovers, post an on-line invitation, prepare tasting notes, provide the whisky, and lead the tasting. Cost per person is $15, except for the host. As host you may wish to provide other refreshments.

Private tastings

If you'd like to host a private tasting, you have two options:

1) Purchase your own whisky

Donate $50 to WhiskyDC and purchase your own whisky from WhiskyDC recommendations. Scottish single malt whiskies generally cost from $40 to $80 per 750ml bottle. Recommendations will include at least five different Scottish single malt whiskies representing different regions and different palate "groups." Travel costs may be requested if the location of the tasting requires more than forty-five minutes travel from the home of the WhiskyDC tasting convener. Minimum number of guests is fifteen and a down payment of $50 is required two weeks in advance.

2) Allow WhiskyDC to provide the whisky

WhiskyDC will tap its access to over thirty (30) Scottish single malt whiskies and you would be charged by the one-half (1/2) ounce, the usual serving size. The cost for serving generally depends on the average cost of the whiskies used. For example, if five whiskies are offerred that cost about $50, $50, $60, $60, and $80, the average cost for each 750 ml (25 ounce) bottle would be $60. Therefore, the charge would be $1.20 per half ounce serving (50 servings per bottle.) With fifteen (15) guests served an average of ten (10) servings (one for each of the formal tasting whiskies and then one of each for informal comparative tastings afterwards), the cost would be 150 servings at $1.20 or $180. Minimum number of guests is fifteen and a down payment of $50 is required two weeks in advance.
